Grade 10 Business
Launching and Leading a Business
Plan it. Launch it. Learn from the results.
Explore what it takes to turn a business idea into a working venture. Groundwork School’s planned Grade 10 business course combines online learning with a practical project connected to camp, a running race or another teacher-approved setting.
Students develop a proposal, plan how it will operate and put it into action. They practise managing resources, serving customers, keeping records and evaluating their decisions.
How the Course Works
Students complete online lessons and assignments with teacher guidance while developing and launching an approved small venture.
The project connection varies by season:
- February courses: Ventures may connect with a running race or another community event.
- Summer courses: Ventures may connect with camp, such as a T-shirt sales initiative, a new tuck shop offering or another approved product or service.
- September courses: Ventures will connect with opportunities available during that intake.
Students may also propose a venture in another setting, subject to teacher approval.
The available projects, locations and participation requirements will be explained before registration. Your teacher will help define a manageable venture with clear responsibilities and opportunities to demonstrate your learning.
What You’ll Learn
Leadership, technology and connections Manage goals, resources, deadlines and risks; evaluate results; compare digital tools and protect data. Explore entrepreneurs’ contributions, challenges, career connections and build a portfolio.
Economic foundations Examine supply, demand, pricing, consumer behaviour, competition, trade and government’s role. Explore Canadian businesses, responsible practices and relationships with Indigenous communities that support reconciliation.
Planning and launching a venture Develop, test and pitch an idea. Research customers and competitors, create a brand, assess requirements, prepare a start-up budget and break-even analysis, explore funding, and launch with measurable goals.
Operations and marketing Plan safe, ethical and sustainable production or service delivery. Develop your mission and marketing approach using product, price, place and promotion.
Accounting and people management Track money coming in and going out, interpret basic financial statements and report financial and other impacts. Explore team management, workplace issues and managers’ ethical and legal responsibilities.
Your Practical Venture
Your project gives you responsibility for taking an approved idea into action.
For example, you might:
- Launch a camp T-shirt sales initiative.
- Introduce and manage a new product offering within a camp tuck shop.
- Develop and sell an approved product or service connected to a running race.
- Launch a small venture in another approved setting.
You will help define the idea, identify customers, plan costs and resources, prepare promotional materials and organize delivery.
As the venture operates, you will keep records, monitor progress, respond to challenges and recommend improvements.
The scope will be agreed with your teacher and the project host. Simply taking over routine duties in an existing business will not cover all the course learning.
How Your Learning Is Assessed
Assessment includes online coursework and evidence from planning, launching and managing your venture, such as:
- Market research and a business proposal.
- A start-up budget and break-even analysis.
- Branding and promotional materials.
- An operating plan.
- Financial records and analysis.
- Progress updates and teacher discussions.
- A portfolio, final presentation and reflection.
Your teacher will assess your understanding, decisions and application of business skills. If you work with others, you must still demonstrate your own learning and contributions.
Your grade is based on your learning, rather than how much profit the venture makes. You will examine the results honestly and explain what you would improve.
What You’ll Need
Students will need a computer, reliable internet access and time for online coursework and practical venture activities.
Project commitments, scheduled meetings, in-person participation and any materials or costs will be explained before registration.
