Grade 10 Career Studies

Discover your strengths. Explore your options. Plan your next steps.

What are you good at? What matters to you? How can your experiences help you prepare for life after secondary school?

Groundwork School’s planned Career Studies course helps students recognize their skills, explore education and career options, and make informed decisions about their future.

Choose from two pathways: Online Career Studies or Career Studies at Camp. Both cover the same curriculum and learning expectations.

Choose Your Pathway

Online Career Studies

Complete teacher-guided online lessons, research and practical assignments during the summer or school year.

Students explore their interests, investigate possible pathways, prepare application materials and develop a plan and budget for their first year after secondary school.

Assignments can draw on experiences from school, sport, music, volunteering, employment and everyday life. Students do not need a job or volunteer placement to participate.

Career Studies at Camp

Complete teacher-guided lessons, assignments and assessments through practical activities connected to camp.

Students explore their strengths and interests while practising communication, teaching, teamwork and workplace skills. Activities may include:

  • Planning and teaching a camp activity, then evaluating how it went.
  • Practising clear communication with campers and colleagues.
  • Preparing a résumé and participating in a practice job interview.
  • Interviewing a staff member about their role and career pathway.
  • Examining workplace responsibilities and solving practical problems.
  • Using feedback to identify strengths and set goals.

Camp activities provide opportunities to apply learning. Students also complete lessons and assignments covering career research, future planning, budgeting and financial literacy.

The camp pathway is available during designated summer sessions. Camp participation requirements and course schedules will be explained before registration.

What You’ll Learn

Skills and habits for success Explore resilience, perseverance, stress management, a healthy school/life/work balance and mental health supports. Practise decision-making, goal setting and reflection.

Your strengths and interests Develop a personal profile of your interests, values, skills, strengths and areas for growth. Consider circumstances that influence your choices.

The changing world of work Investigate technological, economic and social trends, workers’ rights and responsibilities, and transferable skills. Explore networking, digital identity and online privacy.

Education and career pathways Compare apprenticeship, college, university, workplace and community-living options. Research the secondary school pathways and supports that lead to your preferred destinations.

Planning and financial management Prepare a plan for your first year after secondary school and materials that communicate your achievements. Explore saving, borrowing, financial responsibility and budgeting.

Your Career and Life Planning Project

In either pathway, students build a collection of work that helps them understand their options and prepare their next steps.

This may include:

  • A personal profile with examples of skills and strengths.
  • Research comparing education and career options.
  • A plan identifying requirements, opportunities and next steps.
  • A résumé, cover letter or another relevant application.
  • Interview preparation and practice.
  • A budget for the first year after secondary school.

Students do not need to have a career chosen before starting. Their plans can develop as they learn more about themselves and the opportunities available.

Financial Literacy

Both pathways include practical learning about managing money and making informed financial decisions.

Eligible students will also complete Ontario’s financial literacy graduation requirement within Career Studies. Applicable requirements and assessment arrangements will be explained before enrolment.

How Your Learning Is Assessed

Assessment includes assignments, research, teacher conversations, application materials and a final planning project.

For the camp pathway, assessment also includes teacher observations and practical demonstrations, such as teaching an activity, communicating with others and participating in a practice interview.

Students are assessed on their understanding, application of skills, reasoning and reflection. Each student must demonstrate their own learning.

Attending, volunteering or working at camp does not, by itself, complete the course requirements.

What You’ll Need

For the online pathway, students need a computer, reliable internet access and time to complete lessons and assignments.

For the camp pathway, students need to attend the designated camp course activities and complete all required coursework. Any technology requirements will be explained before registration.

Course dates, schedules, participation requirements and assessment arrangements will be provided before enrolment.
