Grade 12 Business Leadership
Management Fundamentals
University/College Preparation
Understand leadership. Practise it. Evaluate your decisions.
What makes a team work well? How do leaders make decisions, manage challenges and help an organization reach its goals?
Groundwork School’s planned Grade 12 Business Leadership course combines online learning with a practical leadership project connected to camp, a running race or another teacher-approved setting.
Students study management concepts, examine business situations and apply their learning through planning, communication, teamwork and decision-making.
How the Course Works
Students complete online lessons, research, case studies and assignments with teacher guidance. They also undertake an approved project that provides opportunities to practise and evaluate leadership.
The project connection varies by season:
- February courses: Projects may connect with a running race or another community event.
- Summer courses: Projects may connect with camp operations, a team initiative or a camp business activity.
- September courses: Projects will connect with opportunities available during that intake.
Students may also propose a project in another setting, subject to teacher approval.
Project opportunities, locations and participation requirements will be explained before registration. The student, teacher and project host will agree on the responsibilities involved.
What You’ll Learn
Foundations of management Examine managers’ roles, management theories, business communication, ethics and social responsibility. Use research, digital tools, reports and presentations to explain your thinking.
Leading Explore human behaviour, workplace attitudes, group development and teamwork. Compare leadership theories and styles, and assess which approaches suit different situations.
Management challenges Investigate communication barriers, active listening, stress, conflict and motivation. Evaluate strategies for supporting individuals and teams.
Planning and controlling Use planning tools, budgets, time management and strategic analysis. Examine organizational culture, responses to change, legal considerations and systems for monitoring performance and making improvements.
Organizing Compare organizational structures, job design and work arrangements. Explore recruitment, training, retention, performance appraisal, employee rights, equity, health and safety, and management career opportunities.
Your Practical Leadership Project
Your project focuses on how people and activities are organized, supported and evaluated.
Depending on the setting, you might:
- Coordinate an agreed part of a running race.
- Lead a camp initiative with support from a supervisor.
- Organize the work of a team involved in camp sales or another activity.
- Develop and implement an improvement to an existing process.
- Complete an approved leadership project in another organization.
You will establish goals, clarify responsibilities, prepare a plan and communicate with the people involved. As the project develops, you will monitor progress, respond to challenges and evaluate your leadership decisions.
For example, a camp sales project could involve organizing team responsibilities, establishing procedures, communicating expectations and reviewing how effectively the team worked.
A running race project could involve coordinating an agreed event activity, preparing team instructions and recommending improvements after the event.
Students work within the responsibilities approved by the project host, with appropriate supervision.
Connect Theory with Practice
Practical experience provides material to examine closely.
You will explain why you chose a particular leadership approach, compare your experience with management theories and consider alternative decisions.
Online lessons and case studies will also address situations beyond your project, helping you explore the full range of course topics.
How Your Learning Is Assessed
Assessment includes online coursework and evidence from your leadership project, such as:
- Research and case-study analysis.
- A project plan and supporting documents.
- Business reports and presentations.
- Progress updates and teacher discussions.
- Analysis of teamwork and management challenges.
- A final evaluation and reflection.
Your teacher will assess your understanding, reasoning and application of management concepts.
Working or volunteering at camp or an event does not, by itself, complete the course requirements. Each student must demonstrate their own learning, including when working with a team.
Prerequisites and Participation
There is no prerequisite for this course. Previous business study is welcome but is not required.
Students will need a computer, reliable internet access and time to complete online coursework and project responsibilities.
Any scheduled meetings, in-person activities and project commitments will be explained before registration.
