Grade 12 Music

Learn it. Play it. Create it.

Refine your musical skills, develop your artistic voice and prepare for continued involvement in music beyond high school.

Groundwork’s planned Grade 12 Music course combines practical instruction with online course work. Continue developing your guitar skills with Groundwork, or incorporate your existing lessons on another instrument.

University/College Preparation

Entry Requirements

Ontario course prerequisite: Grade 11 Music, University/College Preparation.

Groundwork Guitar Pathway: Students must have completed Grade 11 Music, University/College Preparation, on guitar before enrolling in this pathway.

Existing Music Lessons Pathway: Students must meet the course prerequisite and continue lessons on their current instrument. Contact Groundwork to discuss your previous music courses and playing experience.

Choose Your Pathway

Pathway 1: Continue Guitar with Groundwork

Develop your guitar skills through scheduled group lessons, available in person in Mississauga or live online.

Build on Grade 11 through more challenging repertoire, technical exercises and creative projects. Practise independently, refine your performances and develop greater control of musical expression.

Alongside group lessons, complete online course work in theory, listening, analysis, music history and responsible musical practices.

This pathway includes:

  • Group guitar instruction in Mississauga or live online.
  • Regular independent practice.
  • Online lessons and assignments.
  • Performance, composition and improvisation activities.
  • Teacher feedback and assessment.

Pathway 2: Incorporate Your Existing Music Lessons

Continue learning your current instrument with your instructor while completing Groundwork’s online course work.

Your Groundwork teacher reviews your musical experience and lesson program, then identifies how suitable repertoire and activities can connect with the course expectations.

Submit performances and complete theory, listening, research, creative and reflective assignments. Additional musical tasks are included where your existing lessons do not cover a course expectation.

This pathway includes:

  • Continued lessons with your current instructor.
  • A teacher-reviewed plan connecting your lessons with the course.
  • Online lessons and assignments.
  • Performance submissions and additional musical tasks as needed.
  • Feedback and assessment from your Groundwork teacher.

What You’ll Learn

Creating and Performing

Develop increasingly complex performances, improvisations, compositions and arrangements. Refine technical accuracy, expression and artistic choices through rehearsal, experimentation and feedback.

Theory and Musical Literacy

Deepen your understanding of notation, harmony, chords, cadences and musical form. Recognize, reproduce and notate increasingly complex musical examples.

Listening and Critical Analysis

Evaluate live and recorded music, analyse artistic effectiveness, and use research to support informed interpretations.

Music, Culture and History

Investigate musical forms, their development, and social and cultural connections. Research traditional and contemporary music, including Indigenous music from Canada and around the world.

Technology and Responsible Practice

Use technology in performance and creation. Demonstrate safe habits, performance conventions and ethical practices, including respect for copyright.

Personal Growth and Future Opportunities

Evaluate your skills, interests and collaborative work habits. Explore careers, community involvement and postsecondary requirements, including audition or portfolio preparation.

The Same Expectations for Both Pathways

Both pathways include practical music-making and academic course work.

Taking outside lessons does not automatically earn course credit. Your Groundwork teacher assesses your demonstrated learning against the course expectations.

Students are expected to practise regularly, complete assignments, work independently and use feedback to improve their work.

How You’ll Show Your Learning

Your course work may include:

  • Live or recorded performances and technical exercises.
  • Compositions, arrangements and improvisations.
  • Music theory and listening tasks.
  • Research and critical analysis assignments.
  • Practice reflections and teacher check-ins.
  • Audition preparation or a portfolio of musical work.

Your teacher provides feedback to help you refine your skills and identify your next steps.

What You’ll Need

  • Regular access to a guitar for the Groundwork guitar pathway, or your current instrument for the existing-lessons pathway.
  • A computer or tablet with reliable internet access.
  • A way to record and submit performances.
  • A suitable space for regular practice.
  • A camera and microphone for live online group lessons.

Students choosing in-person guitar lessons must be able to attend scheduled sessions in Mississauga. The location and timetable will be shared before registration.

Students incorporating existing lessons continue to arrange and pay for those lessons separately.
