Grade 9 Business

Building the Entrepreneurial Mindset

Learn the fundamentals. Put your ideas into action.

Discover how ideas become business opportunities. Groundwork School’s planned Grade 9 business course combines online learning with a practical project connected to camp, a running race or another teacher-approved setting.

Students identify a need, explore possible solutions, develop an idea and present a proposal. Along the way, they practise research, budgeting, communication and thoughtful decision-making.

How the Course Works

Students complete online lessons and assignments with teacher guidance, then apply their learning through a practical project.

The project connection varies by season:

  • February courses: Projects may connect with a running race or another community event.
  • Summer courses: Projects may connect with camp, such as developing an idea for a tuck shop, T-shirt sales or a new camp service.
  • September courses: Projects will connect with opportunities available during that intake.

Students may also propose a project in another setting, subject to teacher approval.

The project opportunities, locations and participation requirements will be explained before registration.

What You’ll Learn

Leadership and project management Explore leadership styles, set goals, organize resources and responsibilities, manage deadlines and risks, and evaluate progress using feedback.

Business technology and career connections Compare digital tools, use them safely, protect information, explore career connections and create a portfolio of your learning.

Entrepreneurs and their contributions Learn from diverse entrepreneurs, including First Nations, Métis and Inuit entrepreneurs. Explore ownership structures, contributions, challenges and available supports.

Developing an idea Research a market need, compare possible solutions, develop and test a prototype, prepare a simple budget, and consider social, environmental and ethical impacts.

Pitching and communicating Explore funding and mentorship, present your idea and respond to feedback. Research credible information and create, revise and present clear, accessible business materials for different audiences.

Your Practical Project

Your project focuses on developing an idea and explaining why it could work.

For example, you might:

  • Research which products campers would like in a tuck shop.
  • Develop a T-shirt concept and compare supplier costs.
  • Identify a need at a running race and propose a product or service.
  • Suggest a new business activity in another approved setting.

You will investigate your audience, compare options, create a sample or prototype, estimate costs and present your proposal.

You may help with related activities, but the main focus is learning how to develop, test and communicate an idea.

How Your Learning Is Assessed

Assessment includes online coursework and evidence from your project, such as:

  • Research and comparisons.
  • A simple budget.
  • A prototype or sample.
  • Written and visual business materials.
  • A pitch presentation.
  • A portfolio and reflection on your progress.

Your teacher will assess your understanding, the reasons behind your decisions and how you use feedback to improve your work.

Participation in camp or an event does not, by itself, complete the course requirements. Every student must demonstrate their own learning, including when working with a group.

What You’ll Need

Students will need a computer, reliable internet access and time to complete lessons, assignments and project tasks.

Any scheduled meetings, in-person activities or access requirements for the project will be explained before registration.
